Could anyone suggest an explanation for the evolution of this trait in bacteria? Does it confer any advantage? It is also exploited by immunity receptors of some eukaryotes for the recognition of bacteria. In the literature I was only able to find a paper suggesting a possible role in signalling for protein degradation.
