Why would it be impractical to have a telescope with an aperature bigger than 1m?

Because neither you nor I, nor anybody we know, has enough money to buy a lens or mirror with a diameter that big.

Makes you appreciate the telescope now under construction in South America. When it's finished, it'll have an aperture of 30 METERS ! !
