I believe the answer is: research that is relevant to prisoners and their conditions or situations
One example of the research is by figuring out several factors that might related to why the prisoners were arrested in the first place. Factors that might be relevant could include things such as level of education, family relation, environmental condition, etc. By understanding these factors, we can made an efforts to prevent them in the future.
