Divide both sides by -2

5x - 8  -36/2

Simplify 36/2 to 18

5x - 8 = -18

Add 8 to both sides

5x = -18 + 8

Simplify -18 + 8 to -10

5x = -10

Divide both sides by 5

x = -10/5

Simplify 10/5 to 2

x = -2
