2x+40=3x-85

2x-3x+40=3x-3x-85

-x+40=-85

-x+40-40=-85-40

-x=-125

Multiply by -1 to get positive x and for -125

(-1)(-x)=(-125)(-1)

x=125

Check answer by using substitution method

2(125)+40=3(125)-85

250+40=375-85

290=290

Answer is x=125
