how does y=mx+b represent a linear function?

Well for starters, a function is any graph that can pass the vertical line test. this means, if you were to graph y=mx+b, you would be able to pass a line through the graph without two lines being visible by the right side of the pencil at once. It also means that for every 1 x, there is only 1 y. Y=mx+b shows that a function must be SINGLE VALUED.
