Because loess is deposited from the atmosphere it provides an important geologic archive of past atmospheric circulation that can be used to test atmospheric circulation models
Loess often collects in river headwaters, and subsequently gets carried to riverbeds. The buildup can be so dense, that it diverts the water over the adjacent flood plain. This may result in the flooding of rivers.
