Stores responded to the negative connotation of black Friday by terming it as a day whereby stores would be in losses or in red.

The term Black Friday was first used following the two time crashes of the stock market. The first was in September 24th 1869 and on September 19, 1873.

The negative ring that it had to its name made people fear such days in the early days.
