First of all, review the basic formula for a linear relationship:  y=mx + b, where m is the slope of the line represented by this formula, and b is the vertical intercept.

The area of a square (including the area of a square quilt) is  A = s^2, where s is the length of ONE side of the quilt.  This is a quadratic relationship, not a linear relationship.
