Equation 1)  x - y = 5
Equation 2)  3x - 2y = 12

Multiply the first equation by 2.

1)  2(x - y = 5)

1)  2x - 2y = 10
2)  3x -2y = 12

Subtract equations from one another.

-x = -2

x = 2

Plug in 2 for x in the first equation.

x - y = 5

(2) - y = 5

Subtract 2 from both sides.

-y = 5 - 2

-y = 3

Divide both sides by -1.

y = -3

So, x = 2, y = -3
