He sum of two numbers is 40 . the smaller number is 18 less than the larger number. what are the numbers?

Assume x and y are the two numbers :
x + y = 80 - - - - (a)
Also, we know that x = y - 18
Replace the values of x in (a)
y - 18 + y = 80
2y = 98
y = 49
x = 49 - 18 = 31
