In converting 14 centimeters to inches, what unit (omit the number) would you place in the numerator of your ratio?

You have centimeters. To convert to inches you're going to have to multiply by a factor that is inches divided by centimeters. Just like fractions, numerators cancel denominators. 

(x centimeter)*(r inche/centimeter) = x*r (centimeter * inche / centimeter) = x*r inches 

[r = 1/2.54 inche/centimeter = 0.39370 inch/centimeter] 


14 cm * 0.39370 in/cm = 0.39370*14 cm*in/cm = 5.512 in
