Jewish babies getting their Hebrew name is a welcome or an acknowledgment that the child has entered into a brit, a covenant, with God. Blessings are also recited for the child's well being, and the normal wish granted that the child will grow up into a life of studying of Torah, of loving relationships, and the performance of good deeds.
