Solve x2 – 4x – 9 = 29 for x.

we have 2x-4x-9=29
we add nine on both sides and get 2x-4x=38.
2x-4x=-2x, so we simplify the equation to -2x=38.
divide by -2 on both sides, x=-19

is the x2 supposed to be x to the power of 2 (x^2) or just x2 which is like 2x?
