Jacob Riis was a photographer and journalist. He wrote many books including his own autobiography. In 1890, Riis’ published his book "How the Other Half Lives". In his book, he revealed the desperate and sordid conditions of New York City slums. In raising public awareness Riis was not only the force behind social reform but also the sanitary reform movement.
