A place value is 10 times larger than the value previously to it. For example, in the number 333, the ones place represents 3, while the 10 represents 30 and the hundreds represents 300. Decimal values work the same, such as in the decimal .555 the thousandths represents .003, while the hundreds represents .03 and the tenths represents 0.3.
