consecutive integers are numbers in order, 1,2,3,4,5,6,....
if you make x the smaller number the next number will be (x+1).
x +3(x+1) = 23
x +3x +3 = 23
5x = 23 - 3
5x = 20
x = 20/5
x = 4

the smaller integer is 4 then the next is 5
