Robert Louis Stevenson's father, Thomas Stevenson, was a pioneering Scottish lighthouse designer and meteorologist responsible of designing over thirty lighthouses in Scotland. Thomas Stevenson was very disappointed when his son Robert Louis Stevenson did not follow his steps, Robert decided to become a writer instead of following the engineering interests of his family.
