Social facilitation occurs when the presence of others is favorable in performing an easy task or when worse performance is achieved in the presence of strangers and people we are not familiar with. An example of this can be seen in the question above where it shows that the local basketball team seems to perform better against the home crowd on its court. This is because the home audience represents people familiar to the basketball team.
