We know that the final answer has to be an integer, and the integers between -1 and -5 are:
 
-2, -3 and -4

We want the number that has the lowest value when you take its opposite. If we take the opposites of those numbers, we get:

2, 3, and 4

The lowest value is 2, therefore, the number the problem is looking for is -2
